Great news for nature lovers and everyone who cares about our environment! The Ministry of Environment, Climate, and Parks (MECP) is proposing to expand the boundaries of 27 protected areas across Ontario. At a time when our planet’s biodiversity is under threat and our public parks are more popular than ever, this is a big win for nature, our communities and helps bring us one step closer to creating a ecological corridor in South Georgian Bay. The ECA has been actively advocating to all levels of government for the expansion of protected areas in the South Georgian Bay region and was very encouraged to hear this news.

Why This Matters
At the Escarpment Corridor Alliance, we’re passionate about preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of South Georgian Bay and thus have been integral in the support case of this proposal. We’re a Charity focused on creating a well-protected ecological corridor in our region, which helps protect biodiversity and builds resilience against climate change.
One of the key areas in this proposed expansion is Pretty River Provincial Park. This park is a gem, providing a safe haven for local wildlife and a place where people can connect with nature. But with growing development pressures in the area, its ecological health is at risk. Expanding the park’s boundaries is a crucial step in preserving its natural beauty and ensuring it remains a vibrant space for both wildlife, people and eco businesses.
Pretty River PP is also adjacent to the Castle Glen property, one of the ECA’s focus area hot spots planned for mega development.
The ECA was also pleased to see the Bayview Escarpment Provincial Nature Reserve, just northwest of Meaford, on the list of protected areas considered for expansion.

The Benefits of Expanding Our Parks
Larger protected areas mean more room for native plants and animals to thrive. These spaces act as critical habitats, stopover areas for migrating species, and promote the kind of ecological connectivity that’s essential for a healthy environment. By expanding Pretty River Provincial Park and others, we’re not just protecting beautiful landscapes—we’re also helping to combat climate change by preserving ecosystems that absorb carbon and support environmental resilience.
The expanison of the Pretty River PP is a significant first step in the ECA’s development of a regional ecological corridor across the escarpment of South Georgian Bay.
Plus, more park space means more opportunities for you to enjoy the great outdoors! Whether you love hiking, camping, bird watching, biking or just taking in the scenery, larger parks offer more ways to connect with nature and reap the benefits of being outside.
