A Connectivity Approach to Conservation
The Escarpment Corridor Alliance has a connectivity approach to conservation. By preserving and connecting fragmented habitats within our Area of Influence across South Georgian Bay, we ensure a legacy of biodiversity, recreation & wellness, and sustainability for generations to come. Together, we can balance nature, economy, agriculture, and community while safeguarding the heart of our region.
What “Connectivity” means in Conservation
- Wildlife corridors that allow animals to move freely across the landscape
- Linked habitats including forests, wetlands, and shorelines that are resilient to climate change
- Ecological processes such a pollination services, migration, and hydrological function are preserved
- Human–nature connections that support long-term stewardship, preservation and recreation
What Connectivity looks like to the ECA
- Linking protected spaces, such as Provincial Parks, across South Georgian Bay
- Restoring wetlands and other aquatic features that offer essential habitat for biodiversity
- Securing new Nature Preserves within the ECA’s core Area of Influence
- Stewarding the land for wildlife while rebuilding community connection to nature
Connectivity drives everything we do. We’re linking habitats that benefit both nature and human well-being. By collaborating with our community, local governments and environmental organizations, we take a unified approach to ensure lasting conservation and a legacy for future generations.

What Makes Us Unique
Our connectivity approach to conservation is primarily about the alliances we make, whether that be through science, Indigenous guidance, government relationships or the numerous other environmentally minded organizations and local businesses. And the second is by recognizing that the land and waters we seek to preserve are essential for human health and our economy as well. With all of this in mind, we choose to band together for one hopeful outcome – to help safeguard the Niagara Escarpment of South Georgian Bay for nature, for people and for good.

Science & Data First
The ECA is using a science-backed strategy to identify and protect the Niagara Escarpment of South Georgian Bay. For the past two years, we have united communities, public and private stakeholders, and environmental groups in an effort to connect fragmented landscapes and prevent further negative impact to the land and water.
With a strategic, data-driven approach, we are using western science to map and prioritize key land for conservation and sustainable use in the Niagara Escarpment. This powerful tool will identify areas with the greatest impact for biodiversity and engage people already committed to stewardship. With the support of the Greenbelt Foundation, we are accelerating efforts to secure lasting protection for this important landscape.

Indigenous Relationship & Guidance
The ECA is committed to a two-eyed seeing approach that honors both Traditional Ecological Knowledge of Indigenous communities and western scientific knowledge. In protecting the Niagara Escarpment of South Georgian Bay, we recognize and are grateful for the long-standing relationship Indigenous peoples have with this land since time immemorial. We seek to actively engage with local communities and knowledge holders in a respectful, collaborative way. We aim to create an ethical space where we seek to understand and move forward in a good way, together. This inclusive approach strengthens biodiversity, supports thriving ecosystems and communities, and ensures the long-term protection of this vital landscape.

Government Relations and Policy Work
The ECA collaborates with all levels of government to secure policy support, legal protections, and funding for an ecological corridor along the Niagara Escarpment of South Georgian Bay. By advocating for conservation-focused land-use policies, providing science-backed recommendations, and securing grants, we ensure lasting protection for this vital landscape. Partnering with Indigenous governments, municipalities, and environmental agencies, we integrate diverse knowledge systems into conservation planning. Through strategic, data-driven action, we are accelerating efforts to safeguard biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and create a permanently protected corridor that benefits both nature and communities.
