Across South Georgian Bay, farms shape the landscape, sustain local economies, and steward much of the land that makes this region unique. In fact, over sixty percent of the landscape within the Escarpment Corridor Alliance (ECA) Area of Influence is agricultural land. Farmers are essential partners in caring for the land, water, and wildlife that define the region.
That is why the ECA is launching a new initiative in 2026 focused on connecting farmers with conservation and supporting practical, on-farm solutions that strengthen both agriculture and the environment.
This project is part of our broader vision:
To preserve and reconnect land that supports an ecological corridor across South Georgian Bay – for nature, for people, for good.
Why Agriculture Matters to the Ecological Corridor
The landscapes surrounding the Niagara Escarpment are a mosaic of forests, wetlands, rivers, and working farms. Together, these lands create the potential for a connected ecological corridor that allows wildlife to move, ecosystems to function, and communities to remain healthy and resilient.
Agricultural lands are a critical part of that system. Many farms already support biodiversity through woodlots, hedgerows, streams, and pasturelands. With the right practices, farms can also:
- Improve soil health and productivity
- Support pollinators and wildlife
- Reduce erosion and runoff
- Increase climate resilience
- Strengthen the long-term sustainability of the land
Our goal is simple: support farmers who want to explore these practices while respecting the realities of farming.
A Collaborative Approach
The ECA recognizes that farmers are already deeply connected to the land. This initiative is not about imposing restrictions or telling farmers how to farm.
Instead, our goal is to listen, learn, and collaborate.
We want to better understand:
- What challenges farmers are currently facing
- What sustainable practices are practical and effective
- What barriers exist to adopting new approaches
- How conservation organizations can be better partners to the farming community

Farmer Survey: We Want to Hear From You
As the first step in this project, the ECA is inviting farmers across South Georgian Bay to complete a short survey.
The survey will help us understand:
- The current realities facing local farms
- Opportunities for improving soil health and resilience
- What types of support would be most helpful
- How farmers view conservation partnerships

Your feedback will help guide this project and future agricultural initiatives in the region.
Small Grants for On-Farm Projects
ECA will also be offering small grants to support on-farm projects that improve environmental sustainability and long-term resilience.
These grants are designed to support practical, farmer-led solutions that benefit both agricultural productivity and ecological health.
Potential projects may include:
- Pollinator habitat or hedgerow planting
- Riparian buffers along streams or drainage areas
- Soil health and regenerative agriculture practices
- Erosion control or water management improvements
- Small habitat restoration projects on working lands
We know that many farmers are already experimenting with innovative practices. These grants are intended to help support those efforts and reduce some of the financial barriers to trying new approaches.

In addition to this agricultural initiative, the ECA also works as a land trust, helping landholders protect important natural areas while maintaining private ownership.
Voluntary conservation tools may include:
- Conservation easements
- Protection of woodlots, wetlands, or sensitive habitats
- Stewardship planning for long-term land care
These agreements are entirely voluntary and landowner-driven, and in some cases may offer financial or tax benefits while ensuring the land remains productive and ecologically healthy.
