June marks Indigenous History Month—a time to reflect on the deep and ongoing relationships between Indigenous Peoples and the lands we call home.

Here on the Niagara Escarpment of South Georgian Bay, the landscapes we strive to protect are part of much older stories—ones shaped by the care, knowledge, and stewardship of Indigenous Nations for time immemorial. The Niagara Escarpment runs through the traditional territories of many First Nations. The Nation’s whose lands the ECA study area includes are the Haudenosaunee, Huron Wendat, Chippewa and Ojibway peoples. Including the Treaty territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation and Nawash Unceded First Nation. Their presence and leadership are not just part of the past—they are necessary for the present and future of conservation.

At the Escarpment Corridor Alliance, we believe protecting land goes hand in hand with truth and reconciliation. Our work is rooted in respect—for the natural world, and for the Indigenous communities who have long protected and honoured it.

This month, we invite our community to take time to learn, listen, and deepen your connection to the land. Supporting Indigenous voices, knowledge, and leadership strengthens the path forward—for the Escarpment and for all who share it.

Learn, listen and deepen your connection with the land.

Here are some resources so you can be better informed about the Indigenous culture and heritage in South Georgian Bay and beyond.
